”Eliza in Iași” is a photographic essay in which the subject is the city of Iași, seen through the eyes of a main character who has returned to her hometown. The series is created through a documentary approach that follows two perspectives: Eliza’s, as she rediscovers the city, and the photographers, driven by the curiosity of getting to know a new place. Eliza is you, your sister, your cousin, your childhood friend, or your former high school classmate who moved away from Iași, but returned years later. The approach is personal, almost intimate. Photographer Leo Bîrcu cannot — and does not want to — distance himself from the subject. Gradually, he becomes an integral part of what he’s documenting, so the frames begin to be selected through the filter of emotion, evolving into a series of portraits of the city of Iași.
