Pământ paleolitic (Paleolithic Earth) is composed of a series of photographs that represent, on the one hand, a study of the urban landscape and, on the other, a personal, lyrical essay—an active search for visual metaphors. The conceptual intent of the artistic endeavor proposes a method in which the territory of the city of Iași is subjected to a topographic survey, where the camera is used as an archaeological tool for the discovery and attestation of new “vestiges” and “monuments,” through which we might, by interpretation, better understand the society that produced them. The images in the series make subtle references to local history (both recent and distant), touch on social issues related to economic and urban development, and incorporate cultural motifs.
The reference to the Paleolithic signals the intention to consciously observe the territory by taking into account an origin moment understood as the incipient point at which the landscape began to be shaped by human civilization.
